I have been teaching the clarinet and saxophone for over 20 years. I teach to anyone of any age and any level, specialising in complete beginners. Learning to read and understand the music, can be as difficult as the instrument itself and needs patience.
For the clarinet, I use "Clarinet Basics" written by Paul harris - a clarinet player and teacher himself.
For the saxophone, I use "Saxophone Basics" written by Andy Hampton.
I find both these books, great to use. They have duet or piano parts for the teacher, as well as some solo work for the student. There are CDs to accompany them, as well. These are great fun to play along with at home. They also have a great range of pieces from different styles, and give the student a good all-round learning experience.
I use the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, for instrumental examinations. Although, not all students wish to take the exams.
As well as my private pupils, I teach in local schools as a peripatetic. I have found that students who learn individually, progress and learn more thoroughly than those taught in groups. You get more individual attention, and problems, however minor, can get sorted out.
